The U.S. Department of Energy has selected Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) to lead the partnership of national labs, universities, and other institutions that are joined in the effort to carry out the DOE roles and responsibilities for the next-generation Cosmic Microwave Background experiment CMB-S4. The experiment is planned to be a joint DOE and National Science Foundation project.

CMB-S4 will unite several existing collaborations to survey the microwave sky in unprecedented detail with 500,000 ultrasensitive detectors for 7 years. These detectors will be placed on 21 telescopes in two of our planet’s prime places for viewing deep space: the South Pole and the high Chilean desert. The project is intended to unlock many secrets in cosmology, fundamental physics, astrophysics, and astronomy.Learn more >>

Owing to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the CMB-S4 workshop will be held entirely remotely, August 10 - 14, 2020. The meeting is open to everyone interested in the broad range of cosmology and astrophysics that CMB-S4 will impact. Registration is free.

This, the 11th workshop in the series of twice yearly CMB-S4 workshops, will focus on the CMB-S4 science case in conjunction with other experiments and probes. A key goal of the workshop is to engage with the broad community that is addressing science topics similar to those being pursued with CMB-S4, but using different techniques. We will discuss how CMB-S4 measurements can be used to advance these science topics in unique and complementary ways, and work on exploring powerful joint analysis of CMB and other probes.

The workshop has dedicated sessions on the following science topics:
- Synergies of Large Scale Structure Surveys with CMB-S4
- Exploiting the mm-wave window on the Transient Universe
- Complementarity of Cosmological and Beamline Neutrino Experiments
- Shedding Light on the Dark Sector
- Dust and Magnetic fields in the Galaxy
- Illuminating the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM)
- Astrophysics with High-Redshift Galaxies and Clusters
- Observing Cosmic Dawn
- Millimeter Survey of the Outer Solar System

March 30 - April 2, 2020 CMB-S4 Collaboration Workshop at LBNL, Berkeley, CA
ONLY REMOTE ATTENDANCE WILL BE SUPPORTED AT THIS WORKSHOP

Registration is open for the Spring 2020 CMB-S4 Collaboration Workshop to be held March 30 - April 2 at LBNL, Berkeley, CA. The primary focus of this workshop will be on making the necessary technical and scientific progress towards the CMB-S4 baseline design in general and upcoming summer agency review in particular. There will also be significant collaboration business, including amendments to the bylaws and election updates.

In addition to the main meeting there will be social events on Sunday March 29th and splinter meetings on Thursday April 2nd.

The next CMB-S4 Workshop will be held at UCSD October 17-19, 2019. The 2.5 day meeting will focus on continuing the advancement of the CMB-S4 science case, including discussion of recent developments and new innovative ideas, as well as on continuing the refinement of the instrument specifications, moving from the reference design to the baseline design.Learn more >>

CMB-S4 Achieves DOE Critical Design 0 on July 26, 2019
July 28, 2019
We are delighted to report that DOE approved CD-0 for CMB-S4. This is a very significant milestone for us, made possible by the enormous effort of the CMB community ever since CMB-S4 was first conceived back in 2013.

We look forward to advancing the science case and moving CMB-S4 forward on the path to DOE CD-1 and NSF PDR, anticipated in 2021.

Congratulations to CMB-S4 collaboration!

John, Julian and Jim

Cosmology with CMB-S4 workshop at Argonne National Laboratory, March 5-7, 2018.

The series of open workshops to define the CMB-S4 project and collaboration continued this March with the successful Cosmology with CMB-S4 workshop at Argonne National Laboratory. Among the important achievements of this workshop was a finalized set of bylaws for the collaboration, to be ratified immediately after the workshop. This milestone will mark the beginning of the official CMB-S4 collaboration.

The other major goal of the workshop was to begin planning for a report to be submitted in preparation for the National Academies' Astronomy Decadal Survey in Astronomy & Astrophysics.Learn more >>
