The CMB-S4 workshop at Argonne continues the successful series of workshops that bring together the CMB community to plan a coordinated, stage-4 ground-based CMB experiment.

The program for the two days of the main workshop will be developed below.

There will be a poster session held during the reception the first night of the CMB-S4 Collaboration Meeting. We encourage posters that cover CMB-S4 science topics as well as new analysis and technical results from current CMB experiments. Early career scientists (esp. graduate students, postdocs), new participants in the CMB-S4 process, or anyone who enjoys discussing new science over food and drinks are highly encouraged to submit a poster. Posters will remain up for the length of the meeting. Following the procedure at the last workshop, each poster presenter will be given a one minute to speak to give the highlights of their poster(s). One minute per person, no matter how many posters.

NOTE There will be an Argonne site-wide Tornado Drill at 10 am. S4 meeting attendees do not need to participate but be aware that site-wide alarms will briefly sound. A safety overview will have been presented at the beginning of the meeting.

Morning goals: Towards the CDR for the Decadal Survey

Parallel Sessions

(not requesting standard talks, but actionable steps for advancing CMB-S4, especially for the decadal input document and the 2nd edition of the Science Book)

Charge for Readout; Detectors; Telescopes; Cryostat and cold optics; and Reference design parallel sessions:
The goal is to determine as much of the reference design for CMB-S4 as possible at this workshop.

  1. Starting with the major systems or components and work toward the details, i.e., type of detectors, then materials:
    • For what parts of the reference design do we have consensus?
    • For which major parts of the reference design are you not able to reach consensus? Why?
    • Keeping in mind that the reference design is not the final design, what information is needed so that a decision can be made by end of March.
  2. What are viable options that may be considered? (viable includes ready when critical designs need to be made)
    • Which do we want to mention in the decadal input and why?
    • (Suggestion: prior to the workshop, the parallel session coordinators and other interested parties circulate some information about what sorts of things we’d hope could reach consensus during the workshop, e.g., which FPGA does not have to be settled now.)

Charge for parallel sessions related to extending the science case for the Decadal CDR:
The goal is to set the path for drafting new chapter(s) for the revised science book to cover extending the science case, this will also be used for the decadal survey input document.

  1. Determine the chapters topics (titles) and outlines, i.e., scope.
  2. Determine the needed simulations and forecasting, as well as key measurement requirements.
  3. Identify core people to do the work for completing draft by November

Charge for simulations and forecasting parallel sessions:
The goal is to identify the forecasting requirements, schedule, and responsibilities for the coming project definition phase, with a particular focus on the immediate needs of the decadal survey input document and the extended science book.

  1. Inform the definition of the reference configuration and options
  2. Determine how to extend the realism of the forecasting instrument and observation models to reflect the detailed reference configuration and options
  3. Determine how to extend the reach of the forecasting data sets to support the full spectrum of science goals
