Science Council Co-Chairs

Position Description

Over the course of the next two years the Science Council will play important roles in

  • Ensuring that CMB-S4 activities are fundamentally driven by exciting scientific opportunities
  • Communicating the value of the science that will be enabled by CMB-S4, on its own and in the context of other observations and experiments, both internally and to external audiences.
  • Deriving measurement requirements from science requirements, and documenting this process, in support of DOE CD-1 / NSF PDR reviews
  • Developing a list of Key Science Topics

There is plenty of scientific expertise in the Science Council. Perhaps more than additional scientific expertise and perspectives, what’s needed are skills that help the Science Council fulfill its roles. We believe that the Science Council would be most effective with SC co-chairs that are

  • Willing and able to delegate and collate
    • This means requesting input from the right people, synthesizing the received info, and distributing it appropriately.
  • Able to inspire work from what are often unfunded volunteers
    • Most of the key tasks of the SC are mission-critical but not funded, these need to get done by people that are actually being funded to do other work.
  • Able to work with multiple groups (the SC, ET, DM, and TC/Project) to find the intersection of what’s helpful, what’s expected, and what’s possible to do
    • Multiple groups means sometimes conflicting requests and inconsistent information that needs to get reconciled before action can be taken
  • Willing and able to run effective meetings
    • The SC has a broad mandate; keeping tabs on all the moving parts in regular meetings requires structure and efficiency.

Kevin Huffenberger - Florida State University Kevin Huffenberger.jpg As co-chair, I want to aid the Science Council's efforts to push forward the science case for CMB-S4. I want to organize and publicize this case inside and outside the Collaboration. I want to create opportunities for junior scientists and develop the pool of expertise in our community. We will need a sustained effort to translate science drivers into measurement requirements for the DOE CD-1 and NSF PDR reviews, and we will need to work through the implications on the science case of the instrument design and survey strategy. My experience in CMB science is wide-ranging and will help me draw on the broad expertise of the Science Council and Working Groups. In collaborations, I strive to listen to and understand people's expectations and constraints, and to reconcile their ideas to find the best path forward.
Joel Meyers - Southern Methodist University Joel Myers.jpg I have been working on developing the science case for CMB-S4 since 2015. Until recently, I served as Co-Chair of the Light Relics Working Group. My main focus within the collaboration has been on the science associated with light relics and neutrino mass, but I strongly support the full range of science of which CMB-S4 will be capable. I would be delighted to serve as Co-Chair of the Science Council to continue to ensure that the scientific program of CMB-S4 is as successful and as broad as possible.
Joaquin Vieira - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Joaquin Vieira.jpg My top priority as Science Council co-chair will be to make sure CMB-S4 happens. I work on CMB instrumentation, observation, and analysis, which makes me an ideal candidate to work on the flow-down science requirements for CMB-S4 over the next three years. Lately, I have a new leadership role at NCSA which has immersed me in the politics and logistics of LSST, so I have gleaned some experience for the next steps we need to go through for CMB-S4.

My second priority as Science Council Ch-Chair will be to more actively engage the wider astronomical community to foster a broad base of support and engagement. In particular, I would like to make sure we continue to develop the science case for transients, variability, galaxy evolution, and galactic science. I am actively engaged with the wider astronomical community through my observations of strongly lensed SPT sources with, e.g. ALMA, HST, Chandra, and eventually JWST. Finally, I will act as a forceful advocate for equity and inclusion in both our project and our field. I also think it is a priority to foster and mentor the careers of the next-generation of CMB scientists.

Membership Committee Chair

Position Description

The Membership Committee chair organizes and facilitates the activities of the Membership Committee. As an ex-officio member of the Executive Team, the Chair attends those weekly telecons. Committee meetings are held on an as-needed basis, approximately monthly but more frequently when business requires it. The largest single task, now that Collaboration membership is fairly steady-state, is gathering and evaluating the annual activity reports.

John Ruhl - Case Western Reserve University John Ruhl.jpg The Membership Committee performs several important functions for our Collaboration. It helps new members connect with opportunities to contribute, monitors the dynamics of how the membership is engaging with the project, and develops recommendations for how the Collaboration Bylaws can evolve to better serve all our needs. I’ve now served for two years as Chair of this committee, and while I feel the Committee has done great work, I believe there are still areas needing attention. One is how Postdocs can transition to Senior Membership (which we are currently working on); another is our paucity of student members, and how we can encourage enrollment and engagement of them. If I am privileged to serve another term as Chair, I will welcome your input on these and any other issues you feel relevant.

Publications and Speakers Committee Chair

Position Description

The Chair of the Publication and Speakers committee organizes the Publication Board and the Speakers Bureau. The Chair is an ex-officio member of the Executive Team and attends those telecons weekly. For the Publication Board, the main responsibilities are to shepherd projects through the proposal and review processes, with the help of the other committee members as deputies, and to facilitate discussion within the Board regarding policy decisions. For the Speakers Bureau, the main responsibilities are to maintain, with the help of the Bureau, a list of relevant meetings, to inform the collaboration of speaking opportunities, to help organize sessions at the national meetings, recruit speakers, and ensure that requests for talk approvals to the Bureaus are discussed and approved in a timely manner.

Abby Crites - University of Toronto Abby Crites.jpg In a collaboration of our size, making sure everyone is represented in publications and talks is essential. I will work to make sure credit is given fairly so that collaboration members receive credit for their work and are encouraged to contribute. In particular, I will make sure junior scientists receive opportunities to give talks and get credit for their work in publications. My goal as publications and speakers chair would be to help create a collaborative community that is well organized and also dynamic that can adjust as the collaboration grows and changes. I am well prepared to do this thanks to my time on the membership committee and the experience I have gained there with working as part of a team to develop collaboration policy.
